Talent Scholarship Application

Whittier College offers Talent Scholarships for newly admitted students interested in participating in our Art, Music, or Theater departments. Talent Scholarships are awarded based on the strength of an applicant’s audition or portfolio and is an excellent opportunity for students looking to continue their participation in the fine or performing arts regardless of intended major. Scholarship amounts range from $1,000 - $12,000 per year.

CCC Advantage and International students are not eligible to receive Talent Scholarships.

Select 10-20 Pieces of Art. At least two pieces should be drawings, if possible. All submissions must be digital, submitted in .jpg form through Google Drive.

First, log in to or create an account for Google Drive.
Create a new folder in Google Drive, and title that folder “[First and Last Name] Art Portfolio.”
Each piece of art should be a single .jpg image file. (Ceramics and Sculptures may require multiple .jpg images to capture a single work from multiple angles.) Take all portfolio .jpg submissions and place them into this folder.
Finally, right-click on your folder and select Share. In the pop-up window under General Access, select "Anyone with the link" and "Viewer". Before clicking done, please copy the link of the folder so that you may paste it into the textbox below.

If you do not select General Access to anyone with the link, we will be unable to open your portfolio, which may jeopardize your eligibility.

Students should prepare two contrasting pieces; it is strongly preferred that one of these pieces be from the standard classical repertoire in your instrument or voice. This year all auditions will need to be submitted digitally.

Instructions for digital auditions on YouTube:

Videos of live public performances will not be accepted. Treat this exactly as you would a live audition, performing solo or with 1 accompanist in a private room as though you were performing in front of the audition committee.
Make sure that your YouTube video is NOT set to Private.
You may set the video to Unlisted to prevent unauthorized viewers.
Title your video “Whittier Music Audition: [Your Name]”
Include the titles and composers of the works performed in your video description.

Prepare one monologue of 2 to 2½ minutes from a play. No film monologues. Avoid extreme characterizations--we want to see the person, not the mask. Costumes and elaborate properties are not appropriate, but feel free to use simple hand props.

Please submit a YouTube video audition.

Submissions of reels, footage from production work, live public performances, etc., will not be accepted. Videos must be monologues.
Make sure that your video is NOT set to Private.

The Art Talent Scholarship is renewable for four years, provided you offer consistent, high quality involvement and leadership in the studio art sector at Whittier College. The quality of your involvement and leadership will be evaluated each year based on the following requirements:

Enroll in at least one art course per year
Actively participate in the operation and management of the student art gallery
Participate in one student art exhibition each year
Attend all art scholarship meetings
Maintain a 3.00 GPA in studio courses, and maintain a 2.75 overall GPA

The Music Talent Scholarship is renewable for each of your four years of study provided that you fulfill the following requirements:

Participate in a leadership capacity in a Music Department approved ensemble every semester. Requires course enrollment; course numbers vary by ensemble
Enroll in Music 70, Introduction to Music Theory & Musicianship, during your first semester at the College
Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5

Though not required, we also strongly encourage recipients to enhance their musical growth and participation through private study with an Artist-in-Residence.

The Theatre Talent Scholarship is renewable for each of your four years of study, provided you fulfill the following requirements:

Participate in at least two Theatre Arts Department main season productions as either an actor or a technician
Complete at least three credits in theatre per year
Remain in good academic standing with the College

Although not required, most Talent Scholarship recipients will opt to declare at least Theatre Minor, because it only requires an additional two Theatre classes over the course of your four years at Whittier College.
